The film takes place in the pre-war years. NKVD captain Frolov is investigating a sabotage at a chemical plant. Suspicion falls on circus performer Erwin Gross. However, the villainous murder of a clown suspends the investigation. It is only with the help of young circus gymnasts that Frolov manages to establish the truth...

A dying woman’s wish sends her son on a train journey from the steppes of Uzbekistan to the Russian hinterland in search of his father’s grave. Just as the traveler’s home city of Samarkand is situated on the border between East and West, Khamraev balances his film on the edge of two cultures, evoking the soul of Russia and the crumbling beauty of what was once the Silk Road.

The events of the film take place in the 50s in one of the most beautiful cities in the world -blessed Bukhara. This is a story about street poets living in abandoned cemeteries, in mosques, on the roofs of houses.
